TYPES OF RESUMES:
CHRONOLOGICAL: A Chronological Resume is the most commonly used format to outline employment history. It generally lists jobs in reverse chronological order, beginning with current or most recent position and working backward.
This resume is preferred by most employers since, at a glance, it outlines your qualifications briefly and provides basic information about your skills.
The Chronological Resume is best for younger workers, recent college graduates with a bit of experience and those seeking to upgrade careers in the same industry.
FUNCTIONAL: A Functional Resume outlines particular skill sets and then describes where and how you used those skills in your work experience. These qualifications are sometimes referred to as Portable Skills that you can bring from one job to the next.
For example, if you have worked at various sales jobs, you might list SALES as a heading and then list what products or services you sold, the employer and whether you achieved any awards or recognition.
Other examples of headings on a Functional Resume
are MANAGEMENT, TECHNICAL, FINANCIAL, COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE, etc.
The Functional Resume is an excellent vehicle for job-hoppers who want to reduce their diverse skills into one whole package offering or for those interested in switching industries or career paths and can offer skills that will transcend industry boundaries.
This format is favored by individuals with a work history of longer than 10 years or those who do not wish to highlight their age.
Jobs can be listed under the particular headings and it is not always necessary to be specific about years of employment if they reveal too much moving around or hint at your age.
COMBINATION: This format is just as it sounds. It is a combination, sometimes referred to as a hybrid, of the Chronological and the Functional resumes.
It allows certain skills and notable achievements to be outlined at the top of the resume.
CURRICULUM VITAE: This format is specialized
for academics, professors, scientists, physicians and researchers.
It is more detailed than a normal resume and usually contains a synopsis of education and academic degrees
as well as research grants, tenure or track position, publications, awards, honors and member affiliations.
Most RESUME web sites offer you a cookie cutter template. That means everyone else using their service is getting the same product.
The purpose of a resume is to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack so that you can get the interview, and then you can get the job you want. In this difficult job market, you must give yourself every advantage.
Employers look for creativity and innovation in future employees. They want people that take the initiative and present a better product. In this case, the product is you.
